The space rock that recently plowed into Jupiter and gave it a black eye the size of the Pacific Ocean served up a not-so-gentle reminder of the rough and tough side of our universe. The punch to Jupiter was most likely delivered by an undetected comet and prompted some astronomers to warn that a similar surprise could one day strike Earth and send humans the way of the dinosaurs.
