Noam Cohen in Harvard Magazine:
Kevin Davis ’98 remembers walking into Harvard’s Science Center one winter morning and taking the stairs down to the computer lab, a large, windowless room in the basement where about 100 terminals were arranged in neat rows, separated by glass dividers, each with its own rolling office-style chair. The chairs were filled with undergraduates, and out of the corner of his eye, Davis noticed that nearly half of their screens were casting the same blue and white flickering lights. He thought to himself, “That’s weird, because all these students are usually doing their assignments, checking their email.” When Davis reached the student help desk, which he managed as the University’s supervisor of student and residential computing, he realized that the members of the tech support team were no different. Everyone was looking at the same website at the same time.
