Sunday Poem

Pull

At night, beneath the moon’s
light attraction, I drift up
into her gravity of sleep.

When I wake, earth says,
if you are ready to walk,
I’ll hold your feet down.

Sometimes
when you have
to say goodbye
it is good to do it
by the sea, at night,
beneath a quarter moon
that breaks apart and shivers
across the water up on to the glistening sand

it is clear
that always something
is saying goodbye to something –

wave, after wave, after wave

Last Night/ This Morning
……, for Coleman

Quarter moon on its way out,
yet it shone so brightly
the whole night sky glowed with it

I called it a “Shams moon”
because it illuminated
while disappearing

When I woke to the first sunlight,
the sky glowed shyly
with the faded brown-pink
of old Persian rugs

Note. Shams was Rumi’s soul friend who mysteriously disappeared but left
his memory to keep inspiring the poet.
