In search of a feeling of youth she encountered online, Avery Norman constructs an imaginary girlhood informed by a combination of cultural iconography, Internet nostalgia, and personal memory.

If you were a certain kind of girl on the Internet in the 2010s, Avery Norman’s images are likely to feel familiar. Her series Cry To The Angels explores the “aesthetics and emotional architecture” of an imagined girlhood, carrying flickers of the romantic melancholy that surged through platforms like Tumblr and Myspace—images which Norman summarizes as “girls looking sad and bored in beautiful and run down places.”

The resulting images are entirely fictional, informed by a combination of “cultural iconography, Internet nostalgia and personal memory.” Born in 2000 in Houston, Norman’s coming-of-age was positioned at an interesting time for the Internet and social media.
