Marta Halina and Joseph Martin

Marta Halina is University Lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge. She is also Director of the Kinds of Intelligence Programme at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence and a Fellow at Selwyn College. She holds degrees in biology and philosophy and received her PhD at the University of California San Diego in 2013 before becoming a McDonnell Postdoctoral Fellow in the Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology Program at Washington University in St. Louis in 2013-2014. Her recent papers include ‘Apply Rich Psychological Terms in AI with Care’, ‘The Animal-AI Olympics’ and ‘Not Null Enough: Pseudo-Null Hypotheses in Community Ecology and Comparative Psychology’. Joseph D. Martin is an assistant professor in the Department of History at Durham University. He has taught at Colby College, Michigan State University, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Minnesota, where he earned a PhD in the history of science, technology, and medicine in 2013, and has held a research fellowship at the Consortium for History of Science, Technology, and Medicine in Philadelphia. As a historian of the modern physical sciences and technology, he researches how the sciences of materials evolved during the Cold War. He is the author of Solid State Insurrection: How the Science of Substance Made American Physics Matter, (Pittsburgh, 2018), which charts the rise of the solid state physics community in the United States.
