Another person died in an ICE detention center. On Saturday, August 1, Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, a 41-year-old Salvadoran immigrant, was pronounced dead by medical workers at University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, after being transported there from the Delaney Hall Detention Facility, which operates on behalf of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Lopez-Cornejo is the second Delaney Hall detainee to die in the past eight months. The conditions there are deplorable but not exceptional.
Detention facilities like the one where Lopez-Cornejo was caged are linchpins of contemporary white supremacy. Having gained control of state power in large part by stoking fears about a “Great Replacement” of the nation’s white majority by people of color, white supremacists in the United States are now setting about fulfilling their promise to restore the nation by massively amplifying their effort to purge the country of “illegal aliens.”
The crackdown on those deemed alien is not, in other words, simply about fulfilling Donald Trump’s pledge to secure the border. To purify the nation, the Trump regime needs a massive network of interdiction, detention, and deportation. It may seem an ironic predicament given the Right’s long aversion to state bureaucracy. But this isn’t about expanding the redistributive wing of the state—it’s about building a vast paramilitary apparatus to surveil every aspect of life across the nation.
