All of us who live in Western societies have the sense that our world is unravelling and collapsing around us. This can be seen in almost any area one investigates. In international politics, the idea that the international realm is subject to some kind of law, even of the most minimal kind, may always have been more a pious hope than a reality, but now it has become just a bad joke. Domestically, our political systems lurch between massive immobilism and utterly capricious, wanton acts of institutional destruction. Gone is the idea that they automatically ensure a smooth and orderly transition in power from one group of office-holders to another. It has become difficult, if not impossible, to hold that gradual reform within the system is, as it were, its default position. Most importantly, we seem to be incapable of producing political figures who have even a tenuous ability to look reality in the face or a basic competence in dealing with the world.<\/p>\n

This dysfunctionality characterizes not just politics, but the technical, economic, and military domains as well. Our civil infrastructure is falling apart, and the military is no better off: ships and tanks built at great expense malfunction unpredictably. US military forces, on which funds have been lavished for decades, show themselves in a very vivid way to be significantly less irresistible than advertised. The stock market has become a la-la land where prices keep rising despite real economic stagnation. Where is the promised prosperity? Do any parents now still assume that their children\u2019s lives will be qualitatively better than theirs?<\/p>\n

The mood at the hard-right Sweden Democrats\u2019 (SD) election-night gala on Sunday was sombre. Earlier in the evening, party faithful had swayed to \u2018Dancing Queen\u2019 under purple and pink lights, and mimicked Trump\u2019s signature fist pumping to \u2018YMCA\u2019. But as exit poll results started to trickle in, the atmosphere turned. The news was disappointing, if not entirely unexpected: on 17.5 per cent of the vote, the SD had for the first time lost ground in a Riksdag election. Four years ago, as supporters gathered at a waterfront hotel in Nacka to celebrate the party\u2019s historic breakthrough on 20.5 per cent \u2013 making it the second-largest party in Sweden after the Social Democrats \u2013 exuberance reigned. Led by Jimmie \u00c5kesson, whose modern, relaxed presentation is credited with bringing it from the far-right fringe into the mainstream, the SD seemed unstoppable. But on Sunday, the sorry sight of disco lights on an emptying dance floor seemed worlds away from that insurgent energy.<\/p>\n

In 2022, the party\u2019s strong finish gave it considerable bargaining power in negotiations with the traditional bourgeois parties \u2013 the Moderates, Liberals and Christian Democrats. The resulting arrangement was formalized in the Tid\u00f6\u00a0Agreement: the centre-right parties formed a government, led by the Moderate Party\u2019s Ulf Kristersson, while the SD would remain outside the cabinet but support it in parliament in return for substantial influence over policy. \u00c5kesson later made it clear that he did not expect to remain on the outside forever, and during this year\u2019s campaign Kristersson pledged that if the Tid\u00f6 coalition prevailed, the SD would at last be awarded ministerial portfolios.<\/p>\n

After a nail-biting vote count, the SD\u2019s ministerial dreams were not to be. The governing right bloc lost to the centre-left opposition headed by former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson\u2019s Social Democrats \u2013 together with the Left Party, Greens and the Centre Party \u2013 by less than a percentage point, 48.9 per cent to 49.6. The distribution of seats was a mirror image of 2022, with 173 going to the Tid\u00f6 parties and 176 to their opponents. Yet given the razor-thin margin of victory, the winner was also a loser of sorts.<\/p>\n

Catastrophe hit the Himalayas last month when ice and rock collapsed in the Langtang National Park. The ensuing debris and floodwaters travelled 100 kilometers down the Lende Khole river, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi, destroying villages, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities, and other critical infrastructure in its path. More than 1,300 people have been confirmed dead<\/a> and 5,100 are still missing in Nepal; numbers in Tibet are more difficult<\/a> to ascertain. Scientists are still investigating the precise mechanics of the disaster, but consensus is forming that it was the result of a landslide\u2015perhaps caused by bedrock made unstable<\/a> by glacial retreat and its attendant meltwater.<\/p>\n

Hindu Kush Himalaya glaciers lost 12 percent of their area and 9 percent of their ice<\/a> between 2000 and 2020, and glaciers and permafrost around the world are being weakened by global heating. The frequency<\/a> of complex, cascading events in mountain landscapes such as these is only expected to increase<\/a> in coming years. \u201cLandslides have been occurring as long as the mountains have been building,\u201d G\u00f6ran Ekstr\u00f6m, a seismologist at Columbia University\u2019s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, told Science<\/em><\/a>. But \u201cin areas where glaciers are disappearing, these landslides are occurring more frequently.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the rescue mission for the thousands of people still missing continues, Nepal, which is among Asia\u2019s poorest countries, now faces the challenge of recovery and rebuilding. How to pay for that remains an open question.<\/p>\n

See how efficient it still is,

\nour century’s hatred.
\nHow easily it vaults the tallest obstacles.
\nHow rapidly it pounces, tracks us down.It’s not like other feelings.
\nAt once both older and younger.
\nIt gives birth itself to the reasons
\nthat give it life.
\nWhen it sleeps, it’s never eternal rest.
\nAnd sleeplessness won’t sap its strength; it feeds it.
\nOne religion or another –
\nwhatever gets it ready, in position.
\nOne fatherland or another –
\nwhatever helps it get a running start.
\nJustice also works well at the outset
\nuntil hate gets its own momentum going.
\nHatred. Hatred.
\nIts face twisted in a grimace
\nof erotic ecstasy\u2026Hatred is a master of contrast-
\nbetween explosions and dead quiet,
\nred blood and white snow.
\nAbove all, it never tires
\nof its leitmotif – the impeccable executioner
