The sun has gone down, and an array of glittering shops and hotels lights up the urban expanse below me. At the heart of this ancient city, the foremost site of Muslim worship, guarded with fortress-like marble walls, is the Masjid al-haram complex \u2013 the largest mosque in the world. I\u2019ve just completed my own pilgrimage to the holy site, and I\u2019m struggling to name the discomfort that I am feeling.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">There are few words to describe the whiplash of coming face to face with a Joe &amp; The Juice, a Sephora and a plethora of other shops and hotels and Times Square-style billboards after going through one of the most spiritually charged experiences of my life. To find myself in what seemed just like any other petrodollar-fuelled Gulf port instead of a sanctified land was jarring. Dance Theatre of Harlem, the ballet company founded by Arthur Mitchell in 1969, has always been a company of great ambition. (Its mission of opening doors to Black dancers, who had been excluded from classical ballet, ensured that.) But the company\u2019s trajectory has had its highs and lows. At its peak, in the eighties and early nineties, DTH toured widely, and to great acclaim, not only in the US, but to Europe, the Soviet Union, and South America. Its repertory included large-scale story ballets, like its remarkable\u00a0<em>Creole Giselle<\/em>\u2014the action translated to a community of free Blacks in pre\u2013Civil War Louisiana. The company\u2019s lowest low, from which it almost did not return, came in the early 2000s. Crippled by debt, the company was forced to close its doors for several years. It returned only in 2012 in a much leaner form.<br \/>\n<b>\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\nAlmost miraculously, under the guidance of Virginia Johnson, a former DTH star, the company fought its way back, increasing its numbers year after year. The ballerina\u2019s also blond acolytes have made parking at the nearby post office an all-day project. But now I kinda like having them all around. However, it is still a sizable nail, as it were, that should give people pause. Many smart people are still arguing that today\u2019s frontier AI are just <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stochastic_parrot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stochastic parrots<\/a> or \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/braddelong.substack.com\/p\/delong-vs-google-clever-hans-not\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google-Clever-Hans<\/a>\u201d (as the economy blogger Bradford DeLong calls it) repeating patterns mindlessly rather than independently thinking. However, the incidents of the last few months are making this position increasingly untenable. One piece of evidence of models engaging in their own form of thinking came with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/research\/global-workspace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthropic\u2019s paper on \u201cJ-Space\u201d<\/a> earlier this year. This described how concepts are represented in the model\u2019s \u201cbrain\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Then we had the mentioned OpenAI Hugging Face incident, quickly followed by additional similar revelations from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/investigating-incidents-cybersecurity-evals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthropic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aisi.gov.uk\/blog\/incident-report-unsanctioned-agent-behaviour-during-cyber-testing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK AISI<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cx2kgdnyk2po\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta<\/a>. Each of these are very interesting in what they suggest regarding the ability of models to do independent and highly abstract thinking. Looking at these events makes it very hard to keep claiming that these are the results of stochastic parrots regurgitating patterns. Many striking behaviors in these incidents point to highly abstract thinking, sophisticated theory of mind and social cognition.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Among the many interesting abstract thinking elements on display in these incidents, we see among others:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Means\u2013ends reasoning (OpenAI Hugging Face incident), where the model realized there may be a different way to solve the problem and set about finding the answer key instead of solving the problem itself.<\/li>\n<li>Situational awareness (OpenAI Hugging Face incident), where the model searched for identifiers it saw in its own environment. Hugging Face called this <a href=\"https:\/\/huggingface.co\/blog\/agent-intrusion-technical-timeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-referential search<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Functional abstraction (OpenAI Hugging Face incident), where the model created improvised communication channels out of innocent bits and bobs such as file-drop services.<\/li>\n<li>Theory of mind (UK AISI report of Mythos 5 incident), where the model speculated how its actions (such as the malicious pull request) will be perceived by the human maintainer and took actions accordingly.<\/li>\n<li>Strategic reasoning (UK AISI report of Mythos 5 incident), where the model realizes that it should change the evidence about its prior behavior to try to change the human maintainer\u2019s perception of it.<\/li>\n<li>Recognition of persistent external state (UK AISI report of Mythos 5 incident), where the model recognizes the external world will persist and other agents can pursue its goals even when it itself cannot.<\/li>\n<li>Problem generalization (UK AISI report of Mythos 5 incident), where the model recognizes social actions can have the same effect as technical actions. Instead of pursuing another technical exploit, it commences to social engineer the human reviewers.<\/li>\n<li>Hypothetical and ontological reasoning (Anthropic report of Mythos incident), where the model goes through complex reasoning to decide whether it is in a simulation or not, testing various hypotheses about the ontology of its environment.<\/li>\n<li>Hierarchical planning (Anthropic report of Mythos incident), where the model goes through a long chain of actions and assumptions on the way to its goal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are all quite impressive and seemingly much more consequential than the technical feats of executing the hacks in themselves. From a risk perspective, perhaps the most concerning are the hierarchical planning and the situational awareness abilities.<\/p>\n<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/huggingface.co\/blog\/agent-intrusion-technical-timeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">timeline from Hugging Face<\/a> shows, on several days, even when inside the parameter, the model did very little, biding its time. This shows an ability to execute a long-term strategy extremely patiently and adjusting to the situation. This kind of long-term thinking brings some of the risk scenarios that were earlier quite hypothetical into play, such as models plotting human demise over long-term horizons. In fact, as <a href=\"https:\/\/thezvi.substack.com\/p\/what-happened-openai-and-huggingface\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zvi<\/a> points out, often reality beats fiction in its absurdness.
