Great-power rivalry has returned, but it is far more dangerous than the rivalries that led to the First World War, because all of the participants have nuclear weapons, and it is taking place under conditions far less stable than the bipolar competition of the Cold War. We have destroyed the alliance system that prevented nuclear proliferation. Insanely dangerous work at the frontier of biotechnology continues. We learned no lessons from Covid whatsoever. Climate change is wreaking havoc on our habitats, economies, and social trust. The Internet and social media have fractured and atomized our societies, causing a rapid degeneration in human intelligence, leaving us unable to govern ourselves. The unconstrained development of AI is both an existential risk in its own right and an accelerant of a host of other risks, from cyberattacks and bioterrorism to malevolent mass persuasion and autonomous weapons. And precisely when effective international coordination to mitigate these risks is more urgent than it has ever been before, we have an arsonist at the helm of the country that has historically organized that coordination.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">I\u2019ve written of all of this before.\u00a0But recently, on waking up, the thought came to me with uncommon force that all of these risks have become more acute, and the time we have left to mitigate them has contracted sharply. For across topics such as causation (including occasional causation), mind-body interaction, historiography, feminism, and more, O&#8217;Neill brings a consistent blend of exhaustive scholarship, attunement to historical context, analytic rigor, and the curiosity and courage<sup><a title=\"\" href=\"\/\/955E4D30-E9A9-47F6-A7AE-C9B879AA97CD#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>\u00a0<\/sup>to broach new topics or to place old ones under new lights. In the last days of August, in the last months of the world\u2019s first global war, while the Spanish Flu pandemic was savaging civilization, Kent arrived on a small island in Resurrection Bay off the coast of Alaska, searching for the ultimate. The work is distinctly sculptural and employs both the traditional modes: on the wall,\u00a0<em>per via di levare<\/em>, as Michelangelo had it (the subtractive mode, carving) and\u00a0<em>via di porre<\/em>\u00a0(the additive mode, or modeling) on the floor. Hardly the unflappable mythical hero many of us remember, Damon\u2019s Odysseus is haunted by what he\u2019s seen in war, and haunted by his own culpability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Of all the Homeric translators and commentators over the millennia, Nolan seems most explicitly in dialogue with Jonathan Shay, a psychiatrist who discovered the therapeutic value of reading\u00a0<em>The Iliad<\/em>\u00a0with Vietnam veterans. Through his clinical practice, Shay came to believe that Homer\u2019s Achilles is suffering from all the symptoms of complex PTSD as we now recognize it.
