The problem: In 1859, only 1,090 bookstores dotted America. By 1914, there were still only 3,501. So if readers couldn\u2019t find books, books had to find their readers. For certain authors and publishers, including Twain, that was accomplished through subscription publishing, with door-to-door canvassers taking orders for books before they were printed. He also laughs a lot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Can happiness be taught? I met Mingyur (Rinpoche is an honorary title meaning, roughly, \u201cprecious one\u201d) to discover his strategies for a richer life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cAs the Dalai Lama says, we have everything at the touch of a finger, and so when we start to feel lonely, incomplete, bored \u2013 we protect ourselves with whatever: eating ice-cream, our smartphone, coffee,\u201d says Mingyur. \u201cWe try to get away from them, but those feelings are wisdom, in a way. The really important thing is to sit with them, embrace them as a path to explore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For instance, if you find yourself bored while watching a Netflix romcom and simultaneously scrolling on your phone, that\u2019s a signal that ever more stimulation will never be satisfying (science backs this up: one recent study suggests\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/pubs\/journals\/releases\/xge-xge0001639.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flicking between videos on social media makes us more bored<\/a>, not less).
