It\u2019s been a meal of small plates, reflective of short attention spans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The Jamaican writer Marlon James\u2019s new novel, \u201cThe Disappearers,\u201d at 600-plus pages, is instead a maximalist\u2019s banquet: It is humane, blood-flecked, disturbing and sustaining. It takes James 90 pages to say hello. It\u2019s another 70 pages before his story settles into your guts and begins to twist them. It\u2019s yet another 150 before you fully comprehend his loping authority and the scale of his ambitions. Booster rockets fall away. Disparate coordinates begin to converge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Why not just say it? Both Amy Godine\u2019s\u00a0<em>Black Woods<\/em>\u00a0and David Nicholson\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Garretts of Columbia<\/em>\u00a0are histories of this kind. By making vivid the experience of particular men, women, and children whose brief time on earth was blighted by slavery, civil war, and stony-faced injustice, they pay heartfelt homage to the many.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">I say \u201cheartfelt\u201d because both books seem written out of love. In Godine\u2019s case, the love appears to be her adopted home, the Adirondack Mountains, where in 1846 a wealthy landowner and philanthropist named Gerrit Smith offered 3,000 grants of 50 acres each to freedmen and fugitives living in New York City. The idea was to rescue Black families from urban vice, disease, and racism, and teach them to become yeoman farmers.
